I was pretty excited for the iPhone Duo, but I must say my excitement has been dimmed quite significantly by the discovery that the iPhone Duo's nano-texture inner display will have some sort of screen protector which, in typical Apple vernacular, they’re calling a “cover layer”.

In an interview with content creator [Angelica Siciliani Fendi](https://www.instagram.com/reels/DdzWyLRoWGw/?ref=macanorak.com), Apple's Vice President of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron said, *“it's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one”.*

Hmmm.

According to [Apple](https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair?services=applecare&ref=macanorak.com), the “cover layer” can be replaced for $19 (I assume this will translate to £19 in the UK) if you have AppleCare+ coverage. We have no idea what a replacement will cost without AppleCare+.

Bergeron said that Apple has done a significant amount of engineering work to ensure that the cover layer remains durable and in good condition for as long as possible, but that customers will have the option to replace it if it wears down and the ‘crease’ becomes more visible over time.

Incidentally, there are 10 [ultra-thin layers](https://www.macrumors.com/2026/09/09/iphone-duo-folding-screen-layers/?ref=macanorak.com) making up the inner screen of the iPhone Duo in total. Apple reportedly added high-strength glass above and below the folding display panel and custom adhesives that "*allow the layers to glide past one another like the pages of a book, relieving bend stress*". Whereas the outer display of the iPhone Duo is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, the inner display has a custom polymer cover, and no Ceramic Shield.

YouTuber [Vadim Yuryev](https://x.com/VadimYuryev/status/2105706909852651525?s=20&ref=macanorak.com) (MaxTech) excitedly suggested on X that removing the cover layer would give you could be *“a GAME changer if you prefer a glossy display on the iPhone duo with much better contrast vs a less visible crease”*. Um, I don’t think that’s how this works…

Bergeron didn't explicitly say that this is a *user replaceable-layer.* She likely means that it can be replaced by an authorised repair centre, i.e. Apple. I understand that Samsung offers one free screen protector replacement within 12 months of purchasing any fold device. After that, subsequent applications cost $19.99.

I'm all for repairability, but this is making me think that that inner screen is going to be a big step backwards when it comes to durability. This is a screen that *folds* and closes in on itself, so anything trapped in there could potentially cause a real problem. I don't think this is a device to be taking down the beach.

Personally, the news about this cover layer is giving me rather chilly feet.
